Path Less Pedaled are now in Oregon

Cyclists Russ Roca and Laura Crawford—friends to many of us here in Long Beach—are now in Oregon. They recently concluded close to two and a half years of cycling adventures across the USA and as far as New Zealand.

Russ and Laura are starting a new chapter of their lives in the Portland area. We remember them fondly and wish them well.

Check out PathLessPedaled.com to find out what Russ and Laura are up to now, and to review entries of their many cycling travels, both as adventurers in the countryside, and as urban cyclists now familiar with many cities and towns.

Enjoy the huge number of beautiful photographs at PathLessPedaled.com documenting Russ and Laura’s travels and saluting friends met along the way. Also, be sure to review Russ and Laura’s equipment recommendations (as part of YOUR getting yourself prepared for your own grand adventures).

Friends Russ and Laura have just pedaled across the country and taken Amtrak from MA to OR, and are now wintering in Portland. (The only explanation I can figure is that they really, really love getting good use out of their fenders and shopping for rain pants.)

You’d think that there would be some sort of relaxation and rest involved after more than a year of pretty much nonstop pedaling and traveling and the like. But no.  After a week or two in Portland, Russ is already adding value to the already bustling Portland bike scene by producing Pedal People, a series that profiles Portland bike folks. Check out this one about Geoff Franklin of Walnut Designs, who creates the coolest leather accessories for bikes, including my favorite, the Portage Strap, which caused BikeSnobNYC to coin a brilliant new word, ‘dandycross.’

Congrats to Russ for hitting the ground running in Portland. Try to stay dry.

Link of the Week—Laura and Russ

Friends Laura and Russ departed Long Beach at the start of August of 2009 on an open-ended cycling adventure they call “Path Less Pedaled.” One year in, they are still cycling and exploring. Cheers Laura and Russ!

This week, Adventure Cycling dot org offers a clink of the wine glass, (or a ding of its bike bell, if you prefer), in honor of Laura and Russ—Pathlesspedaled dot com. They are being honored as ‘Link of the Week.’

Of course we can easily go directly to Laura and Russ’ website by typing in pathlesspedaled dot com… and of course we can easily go there by clicking on the words Path Less Pedaled in the column to the right. Well, this week—this week only—you can also link to Path Less Pedaled via Adventure Cycling dot org.

We at Long Beach Cyclists do not anticipate Adventure Cycling to feature Long Beach Cyclists dot com as an upcoming ‘link of the week’ anytime soon—even though living in Long Beach is its own kind of adventure.

We are not grumbling. They say that at this point you cannot get on the cover of the District Weekly at any price. Not even Laura and Russ can do that.

Laura and Russ of Long Beach… now in Austin, Texas

Have you been following the cycling adventures of Laura and Russ?

Laura and Russ lived here in Long Beach, but since August have been off on a cycling-life adventure they call Path Less Pedaled. On March 13, 2010, they report that they have cycled into Austin, Texas!

You can see many dozens of photos and read plenty about people Laura and Russ meet and what they are learning. Read their blog at www.pathlesspedaled.com.

Laura and Russ started their adventure last summer in Oregon, then Washington. Later they headed south to steer around the colder reaches of winter.

Tucson, Arizona is home of the Bicas cooperative. (It’s great that here in Long Beach our own bike-repair cooperative, the H.U.B., will celebrate its grand opening soon!)

Back in November, Laura and Russ passed through Yosemite, and before that San Francisco and redwood country.

One of the ways they can afford to travel so long is by working… on the road. Laura makes handmade jewelry. Russ is a photographer familiar to many people here in Long Beach.

Early in the trip, Russ and Laura traveled as far as the Canadian border, and they visited Laura’s mom in Oregon.

Jenny and Katie saw them off at the start of their journey. That was a sad-happy moment in front of Denny’s on Long Beach Blvd… August, 2009.

Could YOU set out on a long-distance cycling adventure?  Before leaving, Laura and Russ boxed and sold off many of their worldly possessions, with all the emotions that doing that entails. The apartment on Appleton was cleaned out; no more rent.

Many friends in Long Beach spent time with Laura and Russ before they departed. Perhaps our hugs and best wishes help them along their way.

What kinds of adventures are YOU making out of YOUR life?
