Bike Valet at Aquarium ‘Night Dive’—Friday June 25

Evening fun… and you can get there on your bicycle! Cycle to the free LB CYCLISTS bike valet at Aquarium of the Pacific.

Night Dive is a special event at the Aquarium of the Pacific, ages 18+, sponsored by Arts Council Long Beach. Explore the aquarium at night… 7:00-10:00 pm… while enjoying live music by Lemon Sun and Jail Weddings, as well as an eclectic mix of music by various DJs.

As you wander the aquarium, you also can watch artist John Culqui paint before your eyes—perhaps even win one of us works—and you can enjoy other artwork created by local artists.

Friday evening, June 25th, the aquarium will be busy with life on both sides of the glass.

Free to Aquarium of the Pacific members, or $11.95 on line or at the door. Bike valet service starts at 6:30 pm.

For more information, go to the Aquarium of the Pacific web site.

By the way, not a single one of the 11,000 animals that call the aquarium ‘home’ rides a bicycle; none of the underwater life will be able to take advantage of the free bike valet service provided by Long Beach Cyclists volunteers. We would be more than happy to provide a nice service for aquarium residents if we could.

Events take place in the East Village—in lots adjacent to the old Acres of Books (Long Beach Blvd. between Broadway and Third), also at East Village Arts Park (Elm near Broadway), and along First between Elm and Linden).

Long Beach Cyclists will provide free bike valet near the old Acres of Books building between 10:00 am and 5:30 pm—happily monitoring your bicycle during those hours. Or… you may chose to show up on foot, or… you may get to the Green Long Beach Festival by taking any bus heading downtown, or… by traveling on the southbound Metro Blue Line.

Car parking near the old Acres of Books lot will be available as well… although some of us who live ‘car free’ secretly might rather see the parking lot for cars nearly empty. Let’s hope that many folks arrive in car pools, and that zillions of folks enjoy the free bike valet.

Green Port Festival and LB Cyclists—a successful relationship!

Over the weekend Long Beach Cyclists gathered for a day of Bike Tours in and out of the Harbor and hosted Bike Valet!

Green Port Festival is a giant outdoor event that attracts about 10,000 people!  The purpose is an all free open house of the Port.  This year they invited us to go green with them and involve bikes.  What better way to be green!

Two months prior to GPF we worked closely with the port team brainstorming, organizing and implementing the bike plan.  Led by Matt Goldman and Ryan Gregnano (POLB’s Bike Guys) we pulled it off!  We transited over 100 people to the GPF via six tours through out the day from The Promenade at Ocean and First St. over the Queensway bridge and into the Port where we than parked bikes in the Bike Valet area of Harbor Way (a total of 160 bikes were parked!)

While in the port, we  led bike tours out to pier “J” via the route along the water’s edge and around the Queen Mary.  Great views and warm weather greeted us while we toured the proposed Inner Harbor Bike Trail that could be implemented soon with the help of the POLB commissioners and City of Long Beach’s Transportation Department.  If you feel inclined (and we hope you do) write some letters to these VIP’s encouraging them to get the ball rollin’!  The route would complement well the already scenic and most always empty bike path that exists there, taking the cyclists around the Spruce Goose dome and all the way out to Pier ‘J’.

This was an incredible success for LB Cyclists!  Thank you to all my lovely hardworking volunteers: Shawn, Josh, Stacie, Travis, Nate, Jenny, Michael, Donald, Tom and Cindy.

Volunteers needed for October 3rd 2009! Fun will be had, promise!

We are searching for volunteers to help with an event !  We will be pairing up with the Port of Long Beach (POLB) for their Green Port Festival on Oct. 3.  LB Cyclists will be offering bike tours into the port for the festival; the route will start at the Promenade (at Ocean) and end at the Port administration building (about 1.2 mi).  We will also be guiding additional inner harbor tours to Pier J to promote the newly proposed bike route.  In addition, our hugely successful Bike Valet service will be offered!  The event will run from 9:00 am to about 3:00 pm, however, if you can only volunteer for a portion of that time, we would still love to have you!

There is much to do for this event, so we need some of our Long Beach Cyclists to help out where they can.  Even if you have never assisted us with any of our events, we still welcome you.  The tasks are very simple and prior instruction will be given.

Our involvement with the Port for this event is a huge benefit for our organization.  They will be reaching out to thousands of homes and many bike friendly businesses with newsletters and flyers, promoting the event and cycling as a fun, sustainable mode of transportation!  Compensation will be offered to the organization and we sure do need that!  POLB is a huge driving force in Long Beach on so many levels.  If we are successful in this partnership, we may be given more opportunities by them in the future to promote our organization and it’s objectives!

What we need help with:

  • Bike Parking Attendants (tag a bike and put it on the rack, plenty of instruction will be given)
  • Bike Tour Monitors (Led by a road cycling instructor you will ride with the groups into the port, helping keep them organized along the way)

Thank you for taking the time to consider helping out!  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Bike-In Movie at the Art….. springtime 2009

The Long Beach Cyclists provided bike parking for Suja’s state of the 2nd District address. We parked a handful of bikes for the event and passed out leaflets about our group. More importantly, we were able to demo our future Bike-In Movie Plans. If you haven’t heard, we’re going to be working with the Art Theater to provide secure bike parking during some screenings of their movies.

You can just roll up on your ride and be given rockstar treatment. No circling around the block. No parking in a residential space five blocks away. We’ll watch your bikes and make sure they are safe and sound while you enjoy the flick. So stay tuned for more!
