GREAT NEWS for Long Beach Cyclists and friends of cycling in Long Beach! Â Long Beach Cyclists now has a tax ID number. Our transition to official status is underway.
Join us this coming Wednesday, November 11th at 7:17 PM at Sipology Café for our November meeting and a moment to celebrate the transition. Sipology Café is located at the corner of Broadway and Linden in the East Village… which is to say, just east of downtown Long Beach.
At the November 11th meeting, we will look briefly at where we are and at what needs doing in the next month or two. Soon we’ll have our first elected board. Perhaps YOU would like to serve as an officer, or in other ways would like to assist or accompany us as we make Long Beach Cyclists an organization that is effective and fun. Advocacy, education, community, fun. All that and more.

In the city where “car-is-king”, being car-free can be difficult at times, but it is entirely possible, as photographer Diane Meyer shows. She gave up her car in 2008 and now gets around via public transit; always traveling with her camera, ready to document the lives of other car-free people she meets.
Through December 11th, the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica is hosting Diane’s great photo exhibit with accompanying narratives of 100 car-free Angelinos she has met in her daily adventures.
If you’re thinking of going car-light or car-free, or if you’ve been doing it for years; this is a great exhibit that shouldn’t be missed.

First off, this ride is a bad idea. You probably shouldn’t go on it. It will be the middle of the night, and you have to work the next day. There are no buses or trains to save you, and only 7-11s and donut shops to feed on. With that being said…
November 2nd, meeting at Eleven-Forty Five is Long Beach Cyclists first (and maybe last) Full Moon Ride. This ride will take us up the San Gabriel River, along the Rio Hondo until it meets up with the LA River, and finally back home on Long Beach’s own Beach Path.
It’s 50-miles, under a full moon, in November. It will be cold, could be rainy, and there are coyotes. If you’re going to ignore my advice and come along on the ride, we recommend having a well-working bicycle. One that doesn’t creak and ache. One that you know how to fix, or one that won’t break. You are responsible for yourself (hey, just like in real life!)
Lights are a must. No lights, no ride. We’ll send you home.
Helmets are strongly encouraged.
November 2nd @ 11:45PM
Meet at Belmont Pier
Ride leaves at Midnight

We are searching for volunteers to help with an event ! Â We will be pairing up with the Port of Long Beach (POLB) for their Green Port Festival on Oct. 3. Â LB Cyclists will be offering bike tours into the port for the festival; the route will start at the Promenade (at Ocean) and end at the Port administration building (about 1.2 mi). Â We will also be guiding additional inner harbor tours to Pier J to promote the newly proposed bike route. Â In addition, our hugely successful Bike Valet service will be offered! Â The event will run from 9:00 am to about 3:00 pm, however, if you can only volunteer for a portion of that time, we would still love to have you!
There is much to do for this event, so we need some of our Long Beach Cyclists to help out where they can. Â Even if you have never assisted us with any of our events, we still welcome you. Â The tasks are very simple and prior instruction will be given.
Our involvement with the Port for this event is a huge benefit for our organization. Â They will be reaching out to thousands of homes and many bike friendly businesses with newsletters and flyers, promoting the event and cycling as a fun, sustainable mode of transportation! Â Compensation will be offered to the organization and we sure do need that! Â POLBÂ is a huge driving force in Long Beach on so many levels. Â If we are successful in this partnership, we may be given more opportunities by them in the future to promote our organization and it’s objectives!
What we need help with:
- Bike Parking Attendants (tag a bike and put it on the rack, plenty of instruction will be given)
- Bike Tour Monitors (Led by a road cycling instructor you will ride with the groups into the port, helping keep them organized along the way)
Thank you for taking the time to consider helping out! Â If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

In 1996, Long Beach became the birthplace of the first US bicycle transit center, Bikestation.
It was set up as a 6-month trial and given numorous extensions until it was established in a permanent facility in 2005.

Structures near the Transit Mall that used to house the Bikestation and the former Long Beach Transit Information Center have been turned into rubble.

The new Transit Information Center is located at the corner of Pine and First.

This August 4th 2009 image shows a huge tractor at work. Below the new earth, there used to be an amphitheater. The Promenade and adjacent areas are getting a new look.

The Bikestation is now once again in temporary housing, this time on Broadway between Pine and Long Beach Blvd.

This concept art shows what is in the works for the new Bikestation when it returns to the Transit Mall in 2010
