Bike Corral in Long Beach, East Village—Wed Aug 4
A ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the first bike corral in Long Beach takes place Wednesday evening… timed perfectly to dovetail with the monthly Long Beach Cyclists general meeting. Don’t miss either one!
This month LBC meets in the East Village—at Utopia Restaurant (First Street and Linden Avenue). We meet at 7:17 p.m. In addition to addressing various items on the LBC agenda (advocacy, education and community), we will be present to celebrate the inauguration of our city’s first bike corral. You’ll have an opportunity to say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ to Charlie Gandy, Sumire Gant, Courtney Aguirre and other behind-the-scenes City representatives who have helped turn this idea into reality.
What IS a bike corral, you say? A bike corral means that a stall formerly used to park ONE car is converted into an area that now can accommodate MANY parked bicycles. From the point of view of local business owners, it is an adjustment to existing parking infrastructure which allows MORE potential customers to find a nearby space.
Utopia Restaurant, the Village Grind Café, City Grounds LBFG (the fixed-gear bike shop), and other businesses near the intersection of First Street and Linden Avenue stand to benefit from the construction of this bike corral. If Long Beach’s first bike corral proves popular with cyclists and with local businesses, it is possible that City planners may duplicate or adapt the model in other business districts.
So… be sure to join us for our regular monthly meeting—held this month at Utopia’s—and you will automatically be at the right time and right place to join in the festivities of the bike corral inauguration.

Fundraiser for AMGEN ride participant—Aug 8
Local cyclist Jerry Hirsch intends to participate in the Arthritis Foundation’s ‘AMGEN California Coast Classic’—a week-long ride in late September that raises funds for arthritis research. Each rider must raise $3,000 to participate. To help accomplish this, Jerry will hold a local ‘bike and wine event’ on August 8th at Wine Country in Signal Hill. If you wish to help Jerry, contact jerry.hirsch@gmail.com, phone 562 243-9909. For more details, click EVENTS at the top of the page, and scroll to the August 8th calendar entry labeled Bike & Wine Fundraiser for Arthritis Foundation Coast Ride Participant.
This fundraiser is not sponsored by nor affiliated with Long Beach Cyclists.
Bike Valet at SAM outdoor concert—July 17
The sounds of the Seventies… music of the likes of Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, the Byrds. Numerous tribute bands will perform for yet another free SAM outdoor concert, this time in the East Village Arts District (First Street at Elm) 5-9 pm.
Show up on your bicycle, because Long Beach Cyclists will offer free bike valet service.
The list of musicians is lonnnnnnnng! Click SAM to see who will perform. And, hey!, on the list, we find Jenny Stockdale’s name! Which, for us at Long Beach Cyclists, means a neat music event will be even greater!
(We know Jenny as a great friend, as a lover of cycling, as a talented musician, and as a skilled writer. AÂ teensy bit of our bias may also be due to the fact that she is a member of Long Beach Cyclists.)
Hint to up-and-coming musicians, future candidates for the presidency of the United States, and others who love cycling: Join Long Beach Cyclists! Small print: No guarantee that you’ll ever see your name in the lights… but if you join LBC, we’ll love you plenty!
