BOARD MEMBERS, ELECTED ON MARCH 9, 2010
President = Bernadette McKeever Vice President = Travis Bos Secretary = Donald E. Moore Treasurer = Michael Bos Member at large = Tom DuvalHISTORY
Long Beach Cyclists was founded as a small, informal organization in the mid-1990s by several League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructors and friends who love the cycling lifestyle. From the beginning, Long Beach Cyclists embraced vehicular cycling—driving one’s bicycle on city streets safely, predictably, legally, responsibly. By the year 2001, Long Beach Cyclists members had provided many hours of input as the City of Long Beach Bicycle Master Plan was first drafted. Long Beach Cyclists embrace advocacy, education, and community.
RECENT LONG BEACH CYCLISTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Long Beach Cyclists with LCI certification have been teaching traffic safety courses for years. Presently, courses are taught at the CSULB Pyramid Annex and have also offered them at Houghton Park. Long Beach Cyclists have organized and participated in countless fun rides and events. River rides, farmer’s market rides, bike-in movies, and more. Long Beach Cyclists have offered many services that benefit the public, such as bike valet parking, gathering data for the census measuring cycling behaviors in our city, assistance in the recent Metro access audit, and manning a station during annual Bike-to-Work Day. And we cooperate with other community groups, lending a hand in efforts to improve the Colorado Lagoon, for example. Furthermore, Long Beach Cyclists, as citizen advocates, make cyclists’ concerns known to city leadership.
NONPROFIT, PUBLIC BENEFIT, AND SEEKING TAX EXEMPT STATUS
In 2009, Long Beach Cyclists filed for and was granted official status as a Public Benefit Corporation, with a tax ID number, Bylaws and so on. Long Beach Cyclists is taking further steps to be granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status by the federal government. On March 9, 2010, Long Beach Cyclists held its first board meeting and election. There will be lots to report in 2010.

COMMUNITY
We are supportive of the initiatives of the numerous cycling-based and community-based groups now working in our city, and we are hopeful that City steps to put Long Beach on the map as ‘bicycle friendly’ have lasting, positive impact. As advocates and cycling enthusiasts, we strive to engage the City constructively. We believe the City in turn benefits because of the knowledge and point-of-view experienced cyclists bring to the table.
We hope to see you at our next regular monthly meeting, and/or at any of the many activities and events that take place throughout the year.
Happy, safe cycling.
