Jenny performs in Bixby Knolls—Fri eve, July 2

Songwriter Jenny Stockdale, (the same smiling, cycling Jenny we all know and love), will be on stage at The Mirage Mediterranean Grill in Bixby Knolls Friday evening.

Monthly ‘First Friday’ art walks in Bixby Knolls make for a great evening strolling and cycling destination. July 2nd, Jenny will do a 45-minute set. Michelle Mangione will also perform. The program starts at 8:00 pm at The Mirage. Click on the poster on the left for more details.

Summer evenings are perfect for cycling from home, but however you get to Bixby Knolls, you won’t want to miss hearing Jenny’s voice and guitar.

‘First Friday’ evening activities take place along Atlantic Avenue in Bixby Knolls. The Mirage is located along Bixby near Atlantic.

Lunch Discount for Cyclists—Friday, July 2nd

Support local bike-friendly businesses.

On the first Friday of every month, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm, many Long Beach cafés and restaurants offer lower prices to customers who show up on a bicycle and dine in. To participate, we are asked to show our helmet or bike lock key.

Click on the thumbnail Lunch Breaks PARTICIPANTS LIST to the right to see the list of the 29 current participants for addresses, web sites and discount particulars.

Lunch Breaks for Cyclists is part of the Car-Free Fridays initiative coordinated by the City of Long Beach (as promoted by BikeLongBeach dot org) in which all people are encouraged to bike to work, one day per month at the very least.

The current list is based on the participants list found at bikelongbeach.org.

Bike Parade for Kids—Sunday July 4th

Fun, free, and lots of red white and blue! If you have young children, if you want them out on their bikes or in the stroller or wagon, and if you love the sight of hundreds of fluttering U.S. flags, this may be the ride for you.

On the morning of the 4th, meet in Belmont Shore along Ocean Blvd. at the corner of Granada Avenue (close to the Long Beach Dog Zone and not far from the peninsula). Registration begins at 9:15 am. It’s free. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver form. The bike parade begins at 10:00 am. Two miles (total) of easy riding, as well as a ‘patriotic costume’ contest and free face painting.

Children are required to wear helmets, and must be escorted by a parent or guardian during the bike ride (along the beach bike path and up and down Bay Shore Avenue south of Second Street).

This event is sponsored by Justin Rudd, Community Action Team (CAT) and Gazette Newspapers. Special parade guests will include Long Beach City Manager Pat West, as well as Councilmembers Suja Lowenthal and Gary DeLong. Long Beach Bicycle Ambassador Tony Cruz will be there, too. For more information, including car parking information, go to www.bikeparade.com.

Bike Valet at Aquarium ‘Night Dive’—Friday June 25

Evening fun… and you can get there on your bicycle! Cycle to the free LB CYCLISTS bike valet at Aquarium of the Pacific.

Night Dive is a special event at the Aquarium of the Pacific, ages 18+, sponsored by Arts Council Long Beach. Explore the aquarium at night… 7:00-10:00 pm… while enjoying live music by Lemon Sun and Jail Weddings, as well as an eclectic mix of music by various DJs.

As you wander the aquarium, you also can watch artist John Culqui paint before your eyes—perhaps even win one of us works—and you can enjoy other artwork created by local artists.

Friday evening, June 25th, the aquarium will be busy with life on both sides of the glass.

Free to Aquarium of the Pacific members, or $11.95 on line or at the door. Bike valet service starts at 6:30 pm.

For more information, go to the Aquarium of the Pacific web site.

By the way, not a single one of the 11,000 animals that call the aquarium ‘home’ rides a bicycle; none of the underwater life will be able to take advantage of the free bike valet service provided by Long Beach Cyclists volunteers. We would be more than happy to provide a nice service for aquarium residents if we could.

LBC F.M.R. and P.A.L.B.I.F. to the P.W.F.—Sun, June 27

Translation, please?

Sure! We’re talking about a family day of easy cycling fun.

Sunday, June 27th, Long Beach Cyclists will cycle to FOUR neat places here in Long Beach… and will even do a picnic. We’ll combine our regular Farmers Market Ride (the F.M.R.) with a special ride to the Patchwork Festival (P.W.F.), where we’ll enjoy a picnic. It’s a silly mouthful, but P.A.L.B.I.F. means pack a lunch because it’s fun! Join us!

We will meet in the morning at Portfolio Coffeehouse (Fourth Street at Junipero).

At 9:45 am we will cycle from Portfolio to Belmont Shore, stopping briefly at Jones Bicycles. (Discounts at Jones for ride participants!)

After Jones, we’ll cycle past Naples to the Farmers Market near the Marina. Fresh fruit and veggies so that your picnic lunch can be extra fresh!

Then we’ll cycle to the Patchwork Festival (at Marine Stadium Park, Appian Way at Nieto) for exploring and chatting… and for our cyclists’ picnic.

The Patchwork Festival is free. It’s about crafts, quilts, things of all sorts made by hand. It’s about mingling, strolling, talking, and shopping locally—celebrating who we are and what we make of our lives.

And our picnic will be as yummy as the ingredients we bring along in our bike baskets. Hope to see you!

L.A. River Ride “Reverse Riders”

Kevin Flaherty—in the orange shirt—shares this snapshot with us.

In Kevin’s photo we see a group of cyclists from the Long Beach area who did the recent L.A. River Ride in reverse. That is, instead of cycling south from Griffith Park to Long Beach and then back to Griffith Park, these “Reverse Riders” cycled north from Long Beach to Griffith Park and then back to Long Beach.

By cycling the L.A. River Ride in “reverse,” one cycles downhill in BOTH directions. Also, one’s water bottle holds MORE water. Some of our readers may think we are just kidding. Indeed we are. Nonetheless, next year we urge you to cycle with the “Reverse Riders” so you can see for yourself.

Check out the la-bike.org web site for an overview of LACBC’s many activities.
