First off, this ride is a bad idea. You probably shouldn’t go on it. It will be the middle of the night, and you have to work the next day. There are no buses or trains to save you, and only 7-11s and donut shops to feed on. With that being said…
November 2nd, meeting at Eleven-Forty Five is Long Beach Cyclists first (and maybe last) Full Moon Ride. This ride will take us up the San Gabriel River, along the Rio Hondo until it meets up with the LA River, and finally back home on Long Beach’s own Beach Path.
It’s 50-miles, under a full moon, in November. It will be cold, could be rainy, and there are coyotes. If you’re going to ignore my advice and come along on the ride, we recommend having a well-working bicycle. One that doesn’t creak and ache. One that you know how to fix, or one that won’t break. You are responsible for yourself (hey, just like in real life!)
Lights are a must. No lights, no ride. We’ll send you home.
Helmets are strongly encouraged.
November 2nd @ 11:45PM
Meet at Belmont Pier
Ride leaves at Midnight

I hope there is another one, because it sounds insanely fun.
I rode on this ride, and YES, it was insanely fun. YES, I hope we plan other rides of this type in the months ahead. Nighttime cycling under a full moon! Fog near the coast, with its magical, limited visibility! North along the San Gabriel River trail. Calls of river birds in the darkness! Clear skies as we cycle inland. Great conversations while the world sleeps. Almost nobody out there, so you can cycle as fast as you wish or find a comfy pace… it’s all good. A dam in the Whittier Narrows area… temperatures drop there somewhat. Cycle to keep the body warm. Then west or southwest… finally a merge south along the L.A. River. Fog again, limited visibility, a delightful halo of red tail lights. Underpasses in which you speed along… this seems dreamlike and makes me very happy. Finally, laughter at Denny’s in downtown Long Beach just as the Blue Line is making its first run for the morning. Still dark out. Wow!
