Don’t Run Red Lights — (Duh!)

RED LIGHT : Biking Rules PSA

An evening with cycling advocate David Byrne

Friday, October 2nd, a presentation including celebrity cycling advocate David Bryne, Jimmy Z of the Bicycle Kitchen, LA’s bicycle coordinator Michelle Mowery, and Dr. Donald Shoup of UCLA, who has done some of the most important work on automobiles and urban planning, and wrote the seminal work, The High Cost of Free Parking: Cities, Bicycles, and the Future of Getting Around

An Evening with: David Byrne, artist/musician; Jimmy Lizama, co-founder, Bicycle Kitchen; Michelle Mowery, senior project coordinator, bicycle planning and programming. LADOT; & Donald Shoup, professor of Urban Planning, UCLA

Musician, artist, author and devout bicyclist David Byrne turns his attention to the fractured, car-mad city of Los Angeles. How can LA–with one of the world’s most challenging transportation systems–become a more bicycle-friendly city? How might the city change if more people made a bicycle their primary mode of transportation? Join David Byrne as he leads a panel of bike advocates, city officials and urban planners in examining the bicycle’s role in transforming the urban experience.

Panelists: Jimmy Lizama, co-founder, the Bicycle Kitchen; Michelle Mowery, Senior Bicycle Coordinator, LADOT; Dr. Donald Shoup, Professor of Urban Planning, UCLA.

A reader (thanks Scott) forwarded this great post from BikePortland.org.

It’s basically a party on a bike!

Practice what you preach

Welcome to another exciting edition of “What’s Wrong With This Picture?!

Your hosts for this show are two of Long Beach’s very own bicycle-mounted Police.

This photo was taken on E. Broadway near Promenade, looking East.

So, how many things can YOU find wrong with this picture?

Illegal Cycling

As you know, Long Beach is looking for a new Chief of Police.

With the city’s commitment to become the most bicycle-friendly city in the nation – it would be ideal if the new Chief had a sense of what his officers could do to make Long Beach safer and more enjoyable for cyclists, and to set the best example possible to citizens and residents.

With that in mind, what questions would YOU have for the new Chief?

Drive-Thrus becoming Bike-Thrus

From BikePortland.Org:

Responding to last month’s biking momma drive-thru debacle, Burgerville has announced that they’ll welcome people on bikes to each of their 37 drive-thrus (which are from this day forward known as cycle-thrus!).

The company also announced that they have already begun adding signs to “alert drivers and bicyclists to safety precautions for bicycle access”. Burgerville’s Chief Cultural Officer Jack Graves will also be on hand to discuss their “expanded bike policy”.

In other biking-in-drive-thru news, Portlander Brad Reber says he got refused at his bank today on liability grounds (the teller told him he “might get hit”). Will banks follow Burgerville’s lead on this issue? We hope and we’ll see.

It is true that bicycles are not vehicles, but those on them ARE drivers – the law says so.
Whilst driving a bicycle, you have all the rights and are subject to all the provisions applicable to the driver of a vehicle .

Wouldn’t not serving you be vehicle discrimination? Why not. I’m calling it.

Volunteers needed for October 3rd 2009! Fun will be had, promise!

We are searching for volunteers to help with an event !  We will be pairing up with the Port of Long Beach (POLB) for their Green Port Festival on Oct. 3.  LB Cyclists will be offering bike tours into the port for the festival; the route will start at the Promenade (at Ocean) and end at the Port administration building (about 1.2 mi).  We will also be guiding additional inner harbor tours to Pier J to promote the newly proposed bike route.  In addition, our hugely successful Bike Valet service will be offered!  The event will run from 9:00 am to about 3:00 pm, however, if you can only volunteer for a portion of that time, we would still love to have you!

There is much to do for this event, so we need some of our Long Beach Cyclists to help out where they can.  Even if you have never assisted us with any of our events, we still welcome you.  The tasks are very simple and prior instruction will be given.

Our involvement with the Port for this event is a huge benefit for our organization.  They will be reaching out to thousands of homes and many bike friendly businesses with newsletters and flyers, promoting the event and cycling as a fun, sustainable mode of transportation!  Compensation will be offered to the organization and we sure do need that!  POLB is a huge driving force in Long Beach on so many levels.  If we are successful in this partnership, we may be given more opportunities by them in the future to promote our organization and it’s objectives!

What we need help with:

  • Bike Parking Attendants (tag a bike and put it on the rack, plenty of instruction will be given)
  • Bike Tour Monitors (Led by a road cycling instructor you will ride with the groups into the port, helping keep them organized along the way)

Thank you for taking the time to consider helping out!  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
